The borough is home to 221,000 people, and although there was a decline in the population during the mid- to late 20th century, that trend is now reversing, thanks to the major developments which have been seen.

The world's first inter-city railway line, the Liverpool to Manchester Railway, passes through Salford, while the borough is also traversed by the M62 trans-Pennine motorway, which provides fast and reliable connections with other major cities across the north of England such as Liverpool, Leeds and Hull.

International connections to the city and borough are provided through the nearby Manchester Airport, which lies south-west of Salford itself, but is easily reached by road via the M60 Manchester orbital motorway.

The arrival in Salford Quays of a large number of BBC staff when the national broadcaster moves many of its operations from London from 2011 is expected to bring a major boost to Salford's economy, and establish the city as a hub of both regional and national creative industries. It will undoubtedly bring the area to the attention of people and businesses right across the UK, and this revival of interest is sure to mean greater demand for reliable courier services to and from the city, and put it back in the kind of spotlight which it has not enjoyed since Lowry's day.
