Phoenix Is one of the most urbane cities in America, while not the most obvious choice; Phoenix rentals make for great holidays. Well designed throughout it has a modernist sheen that is becoming of a town that raised one of America's most prominent modernist architects.

That was Frank Lloyd Wright, a man who shaped America with his distinct approach to architecture, not only creating some of the most iconic buildings in America, but spearheading a whole architectural movement that came to be the style of post war America, and Europe.

Yet Phoenix has produced a number of notable figures other than the prominent architect. Here is a run through some of the notable names that Phoenix has brought in to this world.

Frank Lloyd Wright

Perhaps one of the men who has had the most influence on the Twentieth century American aesthetic. Frank Lloyd Wright is recognised as one of the best and most important architects of the twentieth century. He was key to defining the modernist movement, and furthermore, for popularising, and validating it as a style as it fell under criticism and adversity.

Wright's work is typically characterised by an elaborate modernism. While his designs are clean looking they are endlessly intricate, and at times awe inspiring.

His most famous building may well be his last, the world famous Guggenheim Gallery in New York. One of the most impressive buildings in the city, Wright boasted it would make the nearby Metropolitan look like an art barn.

With its grand rotunda the Guggenheim is a totally different experience in art and one that lasts, as many have pointed out, it is one of the most important pieces in the Guggenheim collection.

Lloyd Wright died in Phoenix shortly before his masterpiece was completed.

Susan Sontag

In the list of American Academics Susan Sontag is indispensable, one of the fiercest and most distinct voices in art criticism in the twentieth century, Sontag's writings continue to fuel discussion today.

Of her most seminal pieces is her book on photography, which is now as important to photography students as Barthes's camera Lucida.

Yet her writings did not stop with criticism and commentary. Sontag was also a prominent writer of fiction. She won the national book award for her second novel In America, after receiving great acclaim for her first, the Volcano Lover.

Then there were a number of plays, and she contributed to the theatre as a writer and director.

It is hard to look back on twentieth century art and omit Sontag's contribution.

Ted Danson

While maybe a step down from the more prestigious figures so far on this list, it is hard to underestimate Danson's cultural significance.

As the main character in the sit com Cheers, damson was beamed in to millions of houses every week, both in America and across the Atlantic.
