Ftc Should Investigate Privacy Violation Of Apple Ios And Google Android

Schumer wrote in letter to FTC that the apps can access data without users consent

. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is suggesting the Federal Trade Commission for investigating the recent reports about mobile applications. These reports say that the mobile applications running Apples iOS and Googles Android are able to access the user address books, pictures and other personal data without the permission of subscriber.

Schumer wrote a letter to FTC in which he expressed concern over a recently published report in New York Times. This report indicates that a loophole in iOS security makes pictures stored in iPhone, iPad and iPod touch device accessible for downloaded applications. These applications can copy entire photo library of the users without any notification or warning. Apart from giving access to pictures and visuals, developers can mine corresponding location data due to the loopholes. The first time, the iOS device asks for permission of the users through a pop-up message that notes approval allows access to location information in photos and videos. According to another follow-up NYT report, the same user information can be accessed by Android applications. The applications copy photos to secure remote server without the permission of subscriber that the app has right to copy the picture to World Wide Web. Still, it is not clear if security vulnerabilities are exploited by any iOS or Android apps.

Schumer wrote to FTC that when someone takes a private photo on a private cell phone, then it should remain private. In the letter of Schumer, another reference has been given to the recent discovery which says that some iOS apps are capable to upload entire address books which include names, telephone number and email address to their servers. In the previous month, Apple stated that its software would be upgraded to allow developers to access the users contact data after receiving explicit permission for doing so. When social networking app Path came in trouble for collecting as well as storing users contact, Apple made the announcement.

Schumer added that it is not clear whether or how these terms of services are being enforced or monitored. The safety measures should be put in place by Smartphone makers for ensuring that the third party applications are not able to violate the personal privacy of user by stealing pictures or data which he/she did not decide to make public. Six leading technology firms including Apple and Google agreed previous month to expend privacy protections for consumers who download mobile apps to their handsets and tablets.
