Full Range Golf Training = Full Range Golf Swing
In the golf swing we aspire to generate speed
, accuracy and consistency simultaneously. No mean feat to say the least. One of the bio mechanically sound ways of teaching is to develop width throughout the golf swing.
Firstly, width creates power; it also creates more time so one does not attempt to strike down at the ball with a thrash and too much flicking of the wrists from a narrow decent. This can work if you may be as gifted a say Sergio Garcia or Rory, Mcilroy, but for ninety nine per cent of golfers we need to utilise the larger muscles, and use that width to create speed and consistency in the golf swing. Think of an elastic band, if you were wanting to fire at the teacher in school you would pull it back until it is fully stretched and tension is built up. Upon release it goes flying across the room and - if your aim is good enough - into the back of the teacher's head. The same applies to muscle development, speed and power required for basic function and an athletic golf swing.
Muscles and tendons must be stretched to enable them to work at maximum capacity.
Athletic golf training follows several principles derived from science, experience and golfing application. Too often training protocols of golf fitness workouts do not follow this neuromuscular principle required for functional development specific to the golf game. Training with full range of motion is just one of these.
An example of which is a simple exercise such as standing dumbell side lateral shoulder raises to develop the delts much needed for top of the swing stability and of course swing speed. Most forms of this will display slightly bent arms, what this does is enable said trainee to lift more weight, thus think they are getting stronger and better.
Following, the muscle must be stretched with resistence to maximise development principle we must therefore maintain fully straight arms throughout. This may lead to less weight being moved, but now focus is on full range of motion and intensity guaranteeing a greater workload on the targeting muscles and others as well.
A great exercise that you can follow the link below displays this very well, activation of the core, lower back and glutes in addition to the shoulders. This is a far superior way to train rather than up and down with bent arms and paused side dumbell raises. Training with intensity such as this and following the stretch elastic band principle, your golf swing and physique will reap the rewards - I assure you.
