. But Frameless that's unusual. A double-glazed patio door can be quite heavy and the frame helps to strengthen it and prevent damage when the door is resistant to sliding. With top-guided sliding action and a Teflon bottom rail, the old problem of sticking has been eliminated (although, if a build-up of dirt is left in the groove, sliding won't be so easy). Now that the doors no longer invite people to use force, side frames have become redundant.

With sliding patio doors, there was another "feature" that proved annoying when doors were open there was always at least one glass panel's width blocking access - often in excess of half the potential access space for two-door systems. Three door arrangements required a third groove or yet more access space was wasted if a third sliding panel shared a dual groove system.

It was for that reason bi folding doors were developed - an extension of the French door that enabled a wider access. Bi folding doors were fully retractable, enabling almost the full width of the potential opening to be used for access. Bifolds needed to have frames, though, because hinges had to be fitted to something.

A UK manufacturer of bi folding doors has developed an innovative patio door that combines the best elements of sliding doors and bi folding doors and discards the now redundant door frames.

Frameless Glass Doors work on a similar principal to standard sliding doors but they pivot at 90 degrees at the end of the rail, making the best use of available space and maximising access between house and garden or apartment and balcony, when fully opened.

When closed, frameless double-glazed doors facilitate an almost uninterruptable view and offer insulation properties equal to or higher than those of bi folding doors.
