On a basic level architecture is concerned with nature
. The fundamental question that faced the animal species was and still remains the question of habitat. How do we exist in this space? How do we use the material in nature to exist?
There is a social theory, lending to the fact that architecture is mainly technical and since not everyone is technically inclined, the subject should be left to the architect alone. This view has pushed away a brilliant art form. Since we are all fascinated by buildings and structures just as much as we marvel at the sight of a good art work; the technical aspect of architecture must be seen as opportunity for exploration in order to enjoy it as an art form.
The aim of this article is to break down the complexities of the subject in order to enjoy it as an interest and not perceive it as a technical matter that is better left to the professionals in the field.

As an art, architecture combines skill, technique and style and as it aims for excellence, it takes us on a voyage of discovery. It incorporates science and arts in the building of structures and facilities and it is unique amongst the arts in the way it combines usefulness and beauty.
Architecture is referred to as the mother of the arts' because it is as old as civilisation; also because of the need of an architectural structure to showcase other art forms. It is one of the art forms that you experience on a day-to-day basis because it is all around us. Unlike other forms of arts, you do not always have to pay to enjoy the view of an architectural work. As often in the irony of life: the most precious things can be enjoyed for free.
To appreciate a good work of architecture, an understanding of the basic concept of the art is required. A good work of architecture is concerned with a few basic questions.
Does it live up to its function
Is it well built
How will it look in years from now
How it relates to other buildings around it
How do we react to it
Architecture is unique in the way it captures our imagination. A grasp on the compliments and contrasts of the structural imposition of the art is essential in order to appreciate it as an art form. Architecture, more so than any other art form, uses time and space more effectively in enhancing the ways in which we live. It can be complimentary or defiant to nature in serving its purpose.

Throughout time, structures have been erected out of need but with advances in technology combined with the knowledge of the environment; this basic premise was transformed into a hallmark of civilisations. Throughout time architecture has been used to demonstrate artistic creativity. Some of the historical monuments and relics have had timeless effects on our consciousness. In appreciating the art, we learnt a lot more from the Greeks, the Romans, and the ancient Egyptians. Even in modern times, though we are too close to see sometimes, the poetry in the structures all around us tell stories that will become more apparent in later days.

As in any field of art, the creator/artist has a vision and through their genius and artistry they are able to bring into life what they have envisaged. In music and films their creativity amuses because they take us on a journey into a world of their creation and allowed us to marvel at their masterpieces through their unique lenses. For a brief moment, we are able to look into the world that they have made through their eyes.
A fan of architecture can enjoy the architect's creativity without being overwhelmed by the technical nature of the subject. Architecture can be enjoyed just like any other art.
There is a slight difference in admiring a work of architecture and the other arts and this lies in its appreciation. It is slightly more difficult to look at a finished architectural project and absorb it all in one, most often than not, it requires experiencing the inside of a structure. Like other arts, it may be subjective in that taste and style differ from person to person. No artwork, however poignant, qualifies as a good work of art if it fails to inspire. Human responses are elicited by experiences and art & architecture are both concerned with inspiring in some ways.
A common problem in architecture is the industry language, the terminologies and jargons can be a turn off. The reason for this is its insistence on precision. Accuracy is emphasised on all levels but the enthusiast does not have to worry too much about this. A non-architect can enjoy the work without becoming an architect just as book enthusiast does not have to be a writer.
Architecture like all art is a medium of transmission. The artist conveys a vision through an image in the hope that it elicits a response in the eyes of the beholder. Certain fluency on the part of the beholder is necessary for a visual transmission to occur.
As in any endeavour that is worth embarking upon, architecture is a voyage that demands time, patience and the willingness to learn. These elements combined with the interesting nature of discovering new ideas, gives the subject credence as an interesting and worthwhile hobby. As a subject matter that is ever maturing in its innovation, it can serve as a life time pursuit. Architecture never ceases to inspire and educate; it never ceases to be relevant.
