With plenty of flat water, white water and suitable coastal areas available kayaking

in Sri Lanka is rapidly taking hold among the local population as a viable and enjoyable leisure activity while holiday makers consider this eco friendly mode of transport as one of the best ways to see the country and to have a grand adventure at the same time.

Several swift flowing rivers, irrigation and hydropower reservoirs, lagoons and coastal areas provide great kayaking opportunities both for adventure seekers and for the more sedate kayakers. Rivers that provide some of the greatest kayaking experiences include the Kaluganga with grade 4.5 rapids that has its origins in the peak wilderness area and passes through an ever changing variety of tropical scenery. The Walawe Ganga a bit more sedate with grade 2 rapids also has its origins in the peak wilderness and has the advantage of flowing through Uda Walawe National Park affording kayakers the opportunity to view gorgeous scenery and wildlife. The Mahaweli the country"s longest river has rapids from grade 2 to 6 and offers a challenging descent from the hills to the eastern plains which can be quite a test for kayakers. It also offers a kaleidoscope of scenery including glimpses of wildlife and rural areas. Several of its tributaries also provide exciting rides with grade 3 to 6 rapids. Kitulgala is where the Kelani River goes wild with seven, grade two and three rapids. Kayakers can go down the gushing waters here amidst beautiful tropical landscapes. Samanalawewa Reservoir is recommended for a leisurely kayaking tour with much to admire such as its prolific birdlife and views of mountains. Customised kayaking safaris take groups of kayakers through rapids and rainforests, beneath spectacular waterfalls, stopover in quiet creeks and set up camp on secluded sandy beaches. Kayaking is one of the best ways to see the interior of Sri Lanka at really close quarters and to explore its coastal areas. Kayaks can also be used for a variety of other leisure activities such as diving and fishing in calm lagoon waters.
