Funchal Airport
Funchal Airport
Funchal is the capital of Madeira, one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Being an island, that means that there are only two ways of getting there. One of them would be by boat. Recent years has seen a ferry starting to transport passengers and cargo between Madeira, the Spanish islands Canarias and mainland Portugal, this means that there isn't a boat that is exclusive to Madeira and it's visitors, unless you are willing to endure a three day trip between two other destinations, meaning you will get to your destination tired and already having lost a couple of days you could spend getting a tan. You can also arrive on the island by boat if you are on a cruise ship, being the city of Funchal one of the most sought out stops that cruise ships make (during the new year season, sometimes there is up to a dozen ships in the harbor and around the city) but that means that you would have to just take a glance at the island, just get take a nibble out of one of the most inviting places in the world. The remaining option is probably the best, which is arriving by plane.
The company that is responsible for the airport in Madeira, MAAN ( Madeira's Airports and Aerial Navigation) has as their main responsibilities the study, planning, construction, management and exploration of Madeira's airports. The island itself only contains one airport, the other airport that is in the same domain of this company is on the neighboring island of Porto Santo. The first flight that landed on Funchal goes back to the year 1964. The airport is only around 14 kilometers from the center of the city, so it will never be a long drive. The airport has a capacity to hold 15 airplanes, with two of wide body, has 16 boarding gates and 40 check in desks. The maximum number of people it can manage in one year can go up to three million and a half. Recently it even won the Outstanding Structures Award that is given by the International Association for Bridge and Structural engineering because of the fine work done on extended runway that is built over the sea.
There are currently 30 major companies operating with the Madeira Airport, receiving and sending passengers all around the world, as far as Copenhagen and Helsinki, being most of the destinies available in countries like Germany, Holland, Spain, France, England, Austria. The flights that go to Germany and England in particular are spread all around these countries, with several cities sending their tourists from all over their kingdoms.
From the airport to the center of the city, as said before is a short car trip, that could last somewhere between fifteen to twenty minutes. There are several bus lines that can take you, a special airport bus that will take anyone arriving on a flight to Funchal just by presenting their ticket sub, free of charge. There are also of course the Taxi Cabs that do the trip in a faster way, but obviously more expensive. The special bus will also take you from Funchal to the airport as well, again, just by showing your ticket. These are your options, and if time is a valued resource, then the best is to come to the island on an airplane, being obviously the safest way of transport and the quickest. The boats will put you in the harbor and right in the heart of Funchal, but by air you do have the time and rest advantage. As soon as you land you will be ready for action, and action is waiting.
