A functional strength training workout routine involves performing compound exercises designed to enhance the relationship between your body's muscular and nervous systems. Undertaking these kinds of exercises can help improve your ability to climb, pull, push, walk, sprint, twist, jump, turn and more. The goal of functional strength training is to transfer to the increases in strength from one movement to another movement. Functional training exercises strengthen the connections between your nerves and muscles for smoother performance, increased grace and better range of motion. You will be using the power of your mind, as well as your muscles to complete these moves.
Repetition of particular movements can be a great way to add such strength, though you can also use the power of the transfer effect to be had from performing related types of movements. You will notice changes in your speed, flexibility, muscular coordination and endurance both in and out of the gym.
One great thing about functional strength training is that you can really tailor your program to include the movements you most need to focus on. In my opinion, the best form of training utilizes compound movements since they incorporate your entire body. If you require a movement to enhance your ability to pull heavy things upward off the ground, isolation movements like bicep curls will be far less effective than something like the clean and press. Compound exercises are essentially the ideal way to integrate all the above components.
I find that bodyweight exercises are a great way to include compound exercises in a functional strength training routine. They require use of a broad range of muscles as well as employ the components that help best transfer strength
That's not to say the weightlifting doesn't have a place in a functional training routine. In fact, a few of my favorite functional strength training exercises involve weights. Combine deadlifts, which utilize your whole body to lift a heavy weight up off the ground, for even faster results! Clean and press is my personal favorite as it involves explosively pulling weight off the ground and pressing that weight above your head. This kind of lifting uses much more of your body than a simple lift. Kettelbells, which resemble a cannon ball with a handle, are also a useful addition to your workout routine. Start your workout slowly, building gradually as your body becomes stronger and better coordinated. It is also important to allow your body adequate resting time between exertions.
The most effective method for gaining functional strength is to repeat a particular motion often. You can get really creative and use an assortment of real world motions using your surroundings. But, it is also possible to enhance your efforts by engaging in a functional strength workout regiment using compound exercises such as deadlifts and the clean and press, as well as bodyweight exercises. You will be surprised how your overall health will improve and your life will become easier.
