One day I and my brother were having a party at my residence and we were discussing about cars on the terrace. All of a sudden my brother fell from the Lavina chair, but he was lucky as he could have a broken hip joint or ribs. This was just the beginning and this was the time I felt that Godgrej products were unlucky for me.
I had a chance to visit Godgrej Lifespace in August 2007 and I was looking for a dining table that was durable and that would be good for a long run. I saw a Lavina dining table, with 6 chairs. I was also attracted to a steel cot and a slimline door cupboard. I had a good opinion about Godgrej as they were the leading manufacturers of furniture. As a consumer I had an opinion that the company would always serve me well and would deliver high quality goods. So I bought the products and before placing an order I had asked the person about the delivery of the goods. The sales person promised me that the goods would be delivered as soon as I make the payment. It totally costed me Rs.48, 500 and I had to take a demand draft as the company would not take cash. The deal was 3 days or money back guaranteed.
Three days had passed and I called the dealer as the goods were not delivered. The dealer told that the goods were on the way and it was getting delayed because the road to my residence was not good. I waited for a day and contacted him again the next day. The excuse given this time was that the delivery man was having his marriage so he was on leave. It was irritating because as a consumer I had to wait for my goods to be delivered after I had made full payment. Considering that I must not disturb the delivery man's honeymoon I had to wait. At last after two days, the delivery was done. A mechanic came the next day and fixed the slimline and cot. I noticed that there was a dent in the cupboard and I showed it to the mechanic. He said it was a defective piece and it had to be replaced. He said that an inspector will come and certify that it was defective.
I feel it is a curse of being a consumer, it took another three months for the inspector to come and certify and the replacement took about 4 months from the date of purchase. We were not able to move freely in the house because of the inconvenience caused by the cupboard. I was happy when the replacement got over and I assumed that I need not worry about the other products. But my assumption was wrong. The RC coir mattress required a firm support but the Godgrej sales person told me that we could use it without the plywood. The cot started squeaking with a foam mattress of Sleepwell and I use to pray before going to sleep. The cot made a noises weird when somebody sleeps on it.
The dining table does not have a firm support. The legs are shaky and the chairs collapsed despite the rare usage. We have stopped having dinner on the dinning table because I wished to have a peaceful dinner. The design and the make are so poor that the company fools the customer by its stylish looks. One day my aunt sat on the dining table and we were having dinner. My aunt is a fat lady and she definitely weighed 90 kilograms at least. All of us were sitting around the dinner table and my aunt was sitting on the chair made by Godgrej. In between the meal, I heard a cracking noise. First I did not have a clue that it was my chair and I thought that it was the crunchy potato chips. Then all of a sudden my aunt went down and there was a total collapse at the dining table.
She broke her hip and more than that it was an embarrassment for me as the incident took place at my place. We rushed her to the hospital and she is fine now after treatment.
I contacted the customer care and told the problems I faced. The customer care were laughing at the incidents rather than consoling me. It was a shame on the company that they had produced such cheap quality goods. I talked to the quality control officer and he said that the products could have become weak during transportation and it was not their problem. I wrote a letter to the assistant general manager and till now there has not been any reply. The show room from which I bought the product is still passive about the incident and I have not had any reply from them either.
