Cat vomiting can be a perfectly natural thing to happen and it is usualy nothing for cat owners to worry too much about. Main reasons your cat could be vomiting is because it ate too much, too fast or it ate something that is indigestable and your cat is simply purging it from the system.

The most usual reason your cat is vomiting are hairballs. Every time your cat grooms herself, she swallows some loose hairs. The hairs are indigestable and they get passed through cats stomach and intestines. During periods of heavy shedding or in cats who groom other cats the cat swallows enough hair so that if forms a wad in the stomach. Cat ejects this wads of hair as hairballs. When your cat caughs up a hairball you should do nothing except clean it up. Long-haired cats are more susceptible to hairballs than short-haired.

If your cat is eating grass and vomits afterwards it could be that cat eats the grass to do just that vomit! If you have indoor cat don't be to mad at her if she eats your plants and flowers. It should alert you to go to the pet shop and buy cat grass. You should also pay attention at what plants do you have in your home. Some plants like oleander, Easter lily, philodendron, English ivy, geranium, foxglove, lily of the valey, asparagus fern, baby's breath, bird od paradise and clematis are poisonous and cause cat to vomit. If you think your cat has eaten poisonous plant you should immediately contact your veterinarian.

Sometimes cat vomiting is caused by rapid change in their diet. If you have recently changed cat food type or supplier this could cause your cat to vomit. Try going back to previous food and reintroduce the new food on a gradual basis.

Food allergies or intolerances can cause your cat to vomit. This is the protective reaction for cleansing its system. Your cat can become allergic to food even after eating it without any problems for a long time. Food intolerances are similar to allergies, but may mean your cat now suffers from a disturbance in their digestive system caused by something in the food. Milk is the most common food intolerance in cats.

Cat vomiting can also be caused by an infection such as giardia, salmonella and others. This is when you need to take your cat to veterinarian to be treated.

Parasites are another common cause for vomiting. Excessive vomiting is one sign along with weakness, weight loss, dirrhea and a pot belly. This is also the reason for your cat to be treated by veterinarian.

Poisons can also be a cause for vomiting. Cats who ingest aspirin or poisonous indoor or outdoor plants, anti-freeze and other poisons may react by vomiting. In this case you may need to induce vomiting by giving your cat a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide every 10 minutes or another method a veterinarian suggests.

The main takeaway is that if your cat vomits and has not recently eaten food or grass or is not vomiting hairballs and shows other signs of illnes, there may be a seriuos problem and you should immediately take your cat to the veterinarian. If you are in doubt, still consult a veterinarian.
