. You don't want to be the fool does it though. There are actually many futon couch designs and it pays to do a bit of research before you make an investment in a piece of furniture that will be with you for years.
The first area where designs can differ comes from the materials used in the frame.

Softwood futons are futons are made out woods such as pine. Softwoods are cost effective material for building the futons and still provides a good quality product. Hardwood Futons are made with better quality woods such as Maple and Oak. The woods are stronger, better looking and will provide are longer lasting futon. The only drawback is the better quality of wood used means these futons are more expensive.
Metal framed futons can provide good value for money. However they may not have the atheistic appeal of a wood finish but they can very nice contemporary designs.
The other factor when looking at futon design is it a bi-fold or tri-fold. Most futons on the market are bi-fold futons.
Bi-fold futons means the cushion is folds in to two parts to form the seat and back cushion of the couch.
Tri-fold futons require the futon mattress to fold in three place. This means the cushion has to fold in underneath the couch or over the back of the couch when the futon is in the couch position.
Bi-fold futons are more expensive however they look far more appealing and usually have more comfortable thicker mattress. This because the mattress does not need to fold in on its self as it does in the case of Tri fold Futons.
