MOLLUSCUM CONTAGIOSUM Molluscum contagiosum is an infection of the skin causedby a poxvirus. The incubation period is variable but isusually around 14 days. A typical lesion is a smooth, firmpapule, with the vertex being umbilicated and containing awaxy substance.Lesions commonly appear on the genitalia, suprapubicarea and inner thighs, but can appear anywhere on the skinsurface. They appear to be more common in people whoare HIV positive, when the face, including the eyelids, maybe involved.Spontaneous regression may occur. Therapies includecurettage and liquid cryotherapy, or the application ofphenol after disruption of the lesions.
