GHANA TO BENEFIT FROM CLIMATE CHANGE FUND - MINISTER

The Minister of Environment Science and Technology of the Republic of Ghana

, Mrs Sherry Ayittey had revealed to the press that Ghana was one of the developing countries to benefit from climate change fund. The Minister also stated government position during the conference and said that the government of Ghana developing a low carbon emissions growth plan which she added would anchor Ghanas sustainable development agenda. She was speaking at the weekly meet the press series at the ministry of information conference room last week Tuesday in Accra when her ministry took its turn to ascertain the policies and programmes of the ministry. She pointed out that the carbon emission development plan would not target industrial and the transportation sector but would also ensure efficiency in the households. She indicated that about US$30 billion was voted for the period between 2010 and 2012 and US$100 billion annually by the year 2020 for the implantation of climate change related socio economic development intervention, implementation of already priotized climate change adaptation and mitigation projects and programmes , disaster risk assessment and management. She said her ministry would add to its program climate fund to help establish genda fund to assist women and children and other vunerable group that would support mitigation and adaptation action. In efforts to fight global warming, the Government of the Republic of Ghana had committed 1% of the District Assembly Common Fund to massive tree planting in hundred Districts of Ghana by the end of 2010. On his part, the president of the Republic of Ghana Prof. John Evans Atta Mills called for equal opportunity for developed and developing countries in climate policies and decisions. The Copenhagen climate change conference was attended by ten head of states and about 40,000 participants around the globe.
