It looks like Tata Nano is all set to get another rival and this time it would be from the General Motors (GM) stable. GM in collaboration with its Chinese associates might launch a rival for Tata Nano in India, reported a leading business newspaper. Timothy E Lee, president, GM International Operations told the business daily, "We will look at every market segment and I wouldn't rule out anything."
After Bajaj-Nissan-Renault's ultra low cost car and Maruti's Cervo this would be the third rival to Tata Nano in the Indian entry level segment. GM is expected to make this possible in association with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC). The two companies have a joint venture. SAIC has a 50 per cent stake in GM India and the Us-based car maker is planning to ride on the Chinese partners back to bring out the rival for Tata Nano. However, GM had earlier termed such a product non-viable for the company. But the SAIC partnership seems to have altered that.
GM in collaboration with SAIC are all set to bring out two minivans Wuling Rongguang and Sunshine in India by 2011. The company also has plans for the commercial segment. The passenger cars are expected to be sold under the Chevrolet badge.
The company has been doing well in India and this venture is sure to keep the momentum going for the company. There are lots of customers hoping good for the company.
There are several reservations regarding Chinese companies and that looks like the reason why the cars would use the GM tag to provide more value and authenticity. Also, GM is looking at volumes through this partnership as that is a key to survival in Indian market.
The current portfolio of GM India includes Chevrolet Beat, Spark, Aveo, Cruze etc.
