We have a mouse and keyboard for our input (interaction) and monitor as an output to display the image, text etc. This is called remote controllers. Key feature of graphical user interface is the separation of intangible representations from general purpose remote controllers, which enables flexibility and malleability.
The idea behind tangible user interface is giving a physical form, tangible representation, to information and computation. This is very different from our approach from the graphical user interface. The representation is physical, which allows people to directly grab and manipulate with objects. This serves as a control mechanism, so they can control the internal computation or digital information. One of may key features is coupling tangible representation and control.
Limits of today's technology is physical representation of any shape, colors. That is why we couple a tangible representation together with an intangible representation, like a video on monitor together with sound. We are creating the illusion, so that people can get dynamic feedback, coupled with these tangible representations.
What we want is to have physical form together with information, so that you can have multiple forms of control of information. This is the way we can use this to help people working simultaneously in collaborative situations.
An example of tangible user interface is Urp, an urban planning workbench. You put physical architectural models on the surface of the table, and its virtual shadows are projected according to a computer simulation time and day and also season. Rotating controls allows you to control a virtual clock, seeing the shadows and reflections when customizing a virtual clock. Urban planners feel like they have a supernatural level of control with people's lives. But there is something about using Urp to change these parameters in real time, which makes you feel powerful, with the use of your fingertips.
Next example is the room, where projected images on two walls as well as the table and computers on side. Using laser scanner, we can capture information from simulations such as land erosion, shadow casting, visibility and trip time. All is captured in three-dimensional geometry and the results are projected back onto clay model, where the advantages of using physical interaction with dynamic qualities is shown. The design is visually captivating, using rich colors and multiple version of the digital information arrayed on and around the physical model in a framework.
Brygg Ullmer, a PhD student is sitting in front of computer workstations with two flat screens. He is not using keyboard and mouse, when working. Instead On the table is metal rack with a collection of objects by the side of it. That objects are called "Tangible Query Interfaces". Physical objects that are used to represent databases, which express relations and queries in database. By picking up a cylindrical object, it looks like holding decorative fringe, but it is actually technical component. It represents a database of five hundred homes in North Carolina. Putting it on the table, brings up the information about those home displayed on the screen as a geographical view.
Those things make you feel that you really hold the information. It feels like a musical instrument or a toy, that children loves to play with it. Adding richness in interaction could make you feel more deeply connect with the information.
