Guwahati is one of the most popular and largest city of North Eastern regions of India
. Guwahati is among the fast growing cities of the country, there are development as well as high increase in population of this city.
One of the surveys done by a UK company says that this city ranks 5th in terms of development in India. Guwahati is located between the Southern bank of the river Brahmaputra and on the foot hills of the well known Shillong Plateau. The city also has an international airport for the convenience of the travellers. Guwahati is known to be a chief centre of education and commerce in Eastern India. The most reputed world class Indian Institute of Technology is also in Guwahati. Guwahati is also famous as the main centre for some kind of cultural activities and sports and the administrative and political activities of the state of Assam. This city is also a chief centre of transportation in the North East Region of the country. Guwahati name is taken from the 2 Assamese words: 'guwa' and haat, guwa means areca nut and 'haat' means market place. This name was initially spelled as Gowhatty which was later changed to Gauhati during the colonial rule in India. Guwahati is assumed to be one of the ancient cities though not much is known about the city but there is its reference in puranas, epics and other ancient literature.
Some ancient sources tell that the city was known as Durojya and Pragjytishpura as different times. The Varman and Pala dynasty of Kamarupa kingdom made Guwahati as their capital during different periods. Guwahati has been the capital of Assam, the North Eastern state under the Pala Rulers.
The city is in the urban form of starfish. There is core in its centre and tentacles which extends towards east, south and west. Guwahati is known for its natural beauty and good climatic condition, the weather of the place is somewhat like Meghalaya. The important tourist place in Guwahati is Kalakhetra. The main areas of Guwahati are Paltan Bazaar, Pan Bazaar, Fansi Bazaar and Ujan Bazaar many urban activities take place here. Paltan Bazaar is situated in the heart of the city and is home to many hotels and restaurants; it is also a commercial hub of the city this is why one can see many offices in this area. Fansi Bazaar another important place is the centre for wholesale and retail and wholesale commercial activities.
