Gabor Shoes, Gabor Style

Hungary's ten million people saw its country enter the European Union in 2004, having found independence from the Soviet Bloc fifteen years previously.

It has a history of subjugation and conquest, and became land locked after losing its coastal ports after the First World War, and it remains so today, though it has emerged as one of the forces of Central Europe.

Just over twenty years ago, change was in the air and Moscow undertook to allow the countries under its sphere of influence to determine for themselves the way forward, and countries such as Hungary chose multi party democracy after years of Russian dominance.

The barbed wire fences separating Hungary from Austria were torn down and Imre Nagy, who was Prime Minister during the 1956 attempts for freedom, and who was executed for his trouble, was reburied with a quarter of a million Hungarians in attendance.

Free elections were held and by 1991 all Soviet troops had gone but that was just the start because economic realities hit as government subsidies were removed and the financial constraints imposed as a result hit home. Unemployment had been virtually non existent under the communist regimes of Eastern Europe and each of the countries had provided a ready market for Hungarian products. That was no longer the case as the centralized aspect of the economy was removed.

The next election found the former Communist Party returned to power as a consequence of the economic situation.

That in itself was not a problem because there was a realisation among all political opinion that the solution to future prosperity lay in the West, and before the turn of the Century, Hungary had applied to join the European Union.

Its success in achieving membership in such a relatively short time was a result of domestic and legal reform and the benefits were soon clear to see. Investment from abroad grew quickly and Hungarians began to enjoy the trappings of the twenty first century whether in the latest fashions, gabor shoes, gabor style, or in travel and entertainment.

However the recent credit crunch highlighted the reality that mere liberalization and contact with the West was not an automatic solution to economic difficulties. An economy over reliant on foreign investment can suffer during world economic down turns and Hungary has been no exception.

Memories of the centrally and subsidized state economy under the communist regime is still fairly fresh in the minds of a large proportion of the Hungarian people, and many when asked would prefer to return to those days, but it is a minority. The younger generations have seen the West and its glamour, its film, music, fashion, gabor shoes, gabor style, the chance to travel, all things that were barred under the regimes pre 1990.

It is a two way thing as many tourists now make their way to Hungary, and particularly Budapest to see the wonderful historic buildings of this fine city.
