Gaining Financial Security With A Medical Transcription Degree

I have been in the human medical field for over 23 years

. I started with basic data entry, learned the entire medical billing industry (since 1985), and implemented four medical billing packages on computers from AS400 to personal computers. I have worked in many positions from data entry, to insurance coordinator, to Billing Supervisor, to Office Manager, to Practice Manager. Each step of the way was via my own on the job training. Using that experience from one position to further enhance my next position as each job duty changed. During one of these positions, I was a Supervisor for the transcriptionists that we employed. Years early, I, myself had been a transcriptionist for an Insurance Claims Department of a larger provider and was able to assist my staff with their work and training.

Currently I am in the animal field of medicine. I work for a veterinarian that only treats horses. He primarily provides support to clients that perform Dressage, Jumping, as well as other related show events. Due to a temporary decline of business which in part may be related to our current economic situation, my hours have been cut in half. I have considered interviewing for full time employment but at the same I have a strong loyalty to my current employer. It is his desire soon to increase me back to full time status. However, for financial reasons (my husband has been laid off since 11/14/09), I wanted to explore what other opportunities may be available in the field where I am more experienced while allowing me an option to work out of my own home.

I have considered the field of MT several times over the last four years but was not in a financial position to get a medical transcription degree. If I could try the flexibility in a part time situation, maybe over time, I could review the possibilities of extending myself into full time employment. To be independent enough to work out of my own home has been a dream of mine for many years. I have reviewed several companies that have offered the medical transcriptionist training but have not encountered any that had a scholarship program available. In 2002, I was at a technical school training to become a CNA, Certified Nursing Assistant. It was an opportunity to continue my education but it required going to an outside facility. SN:0TG9Y2ESY

The option to train at home not only is convenient, but provides the setting I will need to utilize my skills, my home, and my computer to perform my job. I am 53 years old. I learned many, many years ago from my grandmother the desire to continue my growth through constant learning. A position that offers me the capacity to learn has always been my goal with each and every job I accept. To have the ability to continue this direction while at the same time utilizing old and new skills and provide employment in my own home is a dream I would like to bring to fruition. The medical industry is one that will always be prevalent in our society. To know 5 years or more from today that I can remain in this field with its ever changing direction, provide a valuable service and maintain employment is a desire that I have had for several years.
