Galle Face Green Colombo A Sri Lankan Icon
Sri Lanka, which was known as Ceylon until 1972
, is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean, just below the southern tip of India. The island is known for its gorgeous beaches, lush forests, and exotic wildlife. For such a small country, Sri Lanka offers visitors a number of diverse experiences that are easily accessible. One can enjoy the slick metropolitan landscapes of Colombo, the idyllic greenery of Kandy and the stunning beaches of Arugam Bay, all in the span of a few days. The country's small size enables tourists to easily overcome the limitations of public transport. When visiting this sub-continental nation there are several tourist spots that should not be missed. This includes the Sigiriya rock fort, the Dutch Fort in Galle and the iconic Galle Face Green.
Galle Face Green is probably Colombo's most famous landmark. It was the Dutch, former colonisers of the island, that were responsible for clearing the lengthy stretch of land next to the ocean. It was done to afford the cannons of the nearby Colombo Fort a clear line of fire. The actual promenade was constructed by the British in 1859 under the direction of Sir Henry Ward, the then Governor of the country. When it was originally built, Galle Face Green (then known as the Colpitty Race Course) was much larger than the current five hundred metre stretch that it is now and was even used as a golf course and a horse racing course.
At present Galle Face Green spans an area of approximately five hectares and is frequented by foreigners and locals alike. The promenade buzzes with activity everyday but is especially crowded during the weekends. People come here to enjoy the breeze, fly kites, and eat spicy delicacies sold by street vendors. Tourists in Colombo should definitely not miss the chance to visit this historic place.
Foreigners who are interested in learning more about the country's history and culture should head over to Habarana. Surrounded by the historic cities of Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, Habarana is the ideal base from which to explore the island's rich history. When it comes to accommodation, there are few
Habarana hotels that are as good as the Cinnamon Lodge. Situated amidst lush foliage and gently rippling lakes, the
Sigiriya hotel offers friendly service and comfortable rooms.
