These bolts are generally just like any other type of bolt but is galvanized for added protection from corrosion which helps in marine application uses.
These bolts are often referred to as lag screws. They look like a screw really, rather than a bolt because of their pointed end instead of just the more common blunt end as what is on other bolts. These bolts may be created out of steel, stainless steel, hot-dipped galvanized, or silicon bronze to accommodate any and almost all projects needed. Mostly used in the construction area, galvanized coatings are also commonly utilized for a variety of projects within and out of the home. Galvanized lag bolts are made from different types and grades to suffice in the abundance of applications the bolts are used in. Below are just a few of the common bolt types including stainless steel screws, silicone bronze, zinc-plated, and galvanized.
Common Types of Lag Bolts
*Zinc-plated bolts: Moderate protection against rust.
*Stainless steel 18-8 screws: Stainless steel is the material chosen for exterior and marine applications and is produced from a steel alloy with a high corrosion resistance.
*Silicone bronze screws: Used in wood boat building this alloy of copper has better strength and corrosion resistance than brass.
*Hot dipped galvanized bolts / screws: Much more corrosion-resistant compared to zinc-plated. These thick coated bolts work together with galvanized buts for exterior utilization in the costal areas.
Lag bolts are often used to connect large and very heavy timbers, such as beams towards posts. They are used in rail way trestles, bridges and other structures wherein timbers are used. Lag bolts can also be utilized in masonry, in which case these are used with an insert, which is called a lag. The thread of the galvanized lag bolt meshes with the metal, resulting in a secure fastener.
Determine the type of coating you need. A zinc-plated coating provides very minimum amount of protection against corrosion, while stainless steel is more highly resistant to corrosion from outside moisture and saltwater. Silicone-bronze coatings are typically utilized for fastening wood timbers together, are resistant to corrosion. Galvanized coatings are very highly recommended for use in the coastal regions.
Determine the size of the lag bolt you need. The length of the bolt must really be able to penetrate the 1st timber and fasten the 2nd timber to it. The bolt that you purchase should penetrate approximately 1/2 to 1/3 of the second timber. The diameter of the lag screw or bolt should be also proportionate to the size of timbers being fastened. For example, if fastening 2-by-4 size of lumber, use a 1/2-inch bolt.
