Gambling With Free Games

The online presence in China is growing at fast rate

. In 2009 it was estimated that 420 million people in China are now online and that the online gambling industry is worth $3.8 billion. However, new laws are being introduced into China to further restrict what content people can view. From August 1, 2010 laws have gone in place to crackdown and restrict people from 'unwholesome content and internet addiction'. The law is aimed at online games, which target youngsters, and states they should be free from content that cause behavior that violates social mores.

In the United States, online gambling has been illegal since 2006, resulting in this lucrative market to flourish overseas. The law has also forced social gaming companies to make their Facebook poker games into strictly fake-money affairs. This could change dramatically with word that the House Financial Services Committee has passed a measure that will regulate and legalize many forms of online gambling, including poker.

If this bill is passed many social games that currently use points will quickly adapt again and open up to cash bets. Social games that are played by millions for fun will suddenly be looking to cash in on their audience and allow bets with real money. The web has changed a lot since 2006 and having been restricted for so long it is quite possible many people will find themselves gambling more than they can afford in games they have been playing for free.

With tight controls elsewhere, Europe is currently generating nearly half of all the $29 billion revenue. This has not gone un-noticed by European governments who now view this industry as a good revenue generator and means of collecting additional taxes from companies' earnings. Countries such as France and Denmark have liberal laws in place to encourage business and other countries such as Germany, Spain and Switzerland are taking a more liberal view.

With money pouring into Europe is not surprising that Social Development Minister, Rich Coleman from British Columbia, Canada believes a legal regulated alternative should be offered in their own country so that taxes could be collected to fund health care and higher education. He has suggested that people in B.C. are betting $100 million a year on European and illegal sites. Even though gambling is illegal, the B.C. medical association states there are already more than 31,000 people with severe gambling problems. Would the government be using any additional taxes raised to help these people?
