The government fought against online gambling for many years, but they reached a conclusion that regulating internet gambling would be a better strategy for controlling the online gambling industry in South Africa.

In July 2008, the South African government approved the National Gambling Amendment Bill. This bill begins the process of legalizing online gambling in South Africa. Until this is bill becomes a law, South Africans are free to play online on foreign gambling websites. All the major international gambling sites do accept players from South Africa, and they offer different ways for gambling online.
