Game Review Plants vs Zombies: Game of the Year Edition

In case you missed the boat awhile back, here's a little bit of background information for the uninitiated: Plants vs. Zombies is a tower-defence game where the player must protect his brains from being devoured by garden-tromping zombies. The player protects his home (and noggin) by carefully placing offensive and defensive plants in around his house to protect himself from the legions of zombies who try to invade. The player must combat 26 different types of zombie with the help of 49 different zombie-smashing plants at his disposal. Adventures, mini games, puzzles, and even a Zen garden help keep the fun going should the main event ever get too tiresome. To take the edge off the main game, the Zen garden lets you relax and even make some money as you grow plants for both fun and profit. Mini games like zombie bowling offer an amusing spin on the main game-play, as you get to bowl walnuts towards incoming enemies in order to prevent them from getting into your house and devouring your brains.

The only possibly disappointing news about this release is the removal of the Michael Jackson zombie that parodied the un-dead featured in his Thriller video. The PopCap powers-that-be thought it would be best to focus on new zombies rather than pursue a costly lawsuit. That being said, the new release features a new "disco zombie" as a replacement. Insiders claim this zombie will feature flared pants, disco goggle glasses, platform shoes, an afro-zombie hair-do, and platform shoes with fish inside them no less.

With 20 new achievements to look forward to, however, newbies and old hats can look over this loss of flair and focus on all the new stuff to accomplish. If that still doesn't do it for you, rest assured you are now given a chance to outdo both the disco zombie and the zombie formerly known as the "Thriller" zombie with PopCap's new "Zombatar" feature. With Zombatar, users can customise their own zombie and unleash him or her into the game! Okay, so MJ is gone, why not replace him with Chuck Norris, your boss, or even yourself? Customise your own zombie's colour, hairstyle, and even add bits of flair like sunglasses or an "I love brains" baby bib! Then set him loose on a brain-eating frenzy and hope you can take him out before he tromps all over your beautiful garden!

Plants vs. Zombies is one of those delightfully entertaining titles that gets you addicted regardless of whether you are a casual player or hard-core veteran gamer. The additions to the Game of the Year Edition only further increase this addiction. What's next in this series? An expanded arsenal of plants? Multi-player gaming? Sharing zombies online? Let's hope Plants vs. Zombies 2 gets a Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber zombie for us to look forward to destroying!
