However, while it is true that all garage door openers offer the same conveniences and level of security, not all models are the same when viewed through other factors. Brought about by the different brands and price ranges, there are certainly various types of garage door openers to choose from. Aside from brand and price, garage door openers also differ in another aspect: the mechanical drive that performs the crucial lifting action of the door. In this sense, there are three types that distinguish one garage door opener to the next: the chain drive, the screw drive, and the belt drive. What are the salient features of each?

Chain Drive Models

Models classified as chain drive openers are those that utilize metal chains to connect the garage door to the opener motor. In this type of contraption, the chain retracts the garage door into an open position once the motor is activated. Since this is the most traditional type, it is noisier compared with the two other models. Due to the metal-on-metal noise it generates, it may not be a good choice for those who are looking for a quiet operation. Fortunately, newer options are available to cut back on the noise made by this traditional garage door opener.

Screw Drive Models

Of the three, the screw drive opener has the least number of moving parts, making it the easiest to install. Apart from ease of installation, it is also different from a chain drive and a belt drive garage door opener because it uses a lifting mechanism powered by a threaded steel rod, which is essentially different from the operations found in the two other models.

Belt Drive Models

Next in the list are belt drive openers that, essentially, operate on the same principle as a chain drive opener. The difference between the two is that the level of noise generated by the former is not as great as that generated by the latter. The main reason behind this is the fact that belt drive openers use rubber belts that create less friction (and therefore, less noise). Since belt drive models tend to be the quietest of the group, they could also come at a higher price.
