Step 1 - Strap on your goggles and throw those gloves on. Be sure you're able to pay close attention, and know that with the amount of tension residing within these springs, someone could be seriously injured. Take any and all safety precautions you deem necessary.

Step 2 - It's important to replace springs in pairs, even if you feel the other one is in good condition. It's a good assumption that if one spring has broken, that the other one will not be far behind. Better to catch it now, than later on.

Step 3 - Get your door in the lifted position, all the way to the top of the tracks. Next, grab your vice grips and place one on each track in order to prohibit the wheels from moving.

Step 4 - Your next step will be unhooking each spring. If you still have a spring that is hooked up, expect tension and be careful. Release it from the eye loop by pulling up on the top or down on the bottom of the spring.

Step 5 - Make sure to call up your local garage door supplier to make certain they carry the springs you need. If they don't have them readily available, ask them to order it.

Step 6 - Once you've obtained your new springs, you can install them! Start by inserting a hook into the bottom eye-hole and pull the spring to a point where you will be able to insert the top loop through the top eye-hole.

Step 7 - Make sure to unclamp your vice grips and run the unit to make sure everything is working the way it should. Inspect your work for any strange noises, and to make sure all parts are working properly.
