Garage Organization-a Step By Step Guide
Recently I read a funny one liner on the web which goes like
, "Only in America do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway, and put our useless junk in the garage". I am sure many of us would agree with this ! We take very good care of our house; always find ourselves busy in organizing & decorating our house & storing unused household items in the garage. From old juicer, to the precious but broken night lamp, the treadmill which you no longer use, your unused sports gear- everything eventually makes its way to the garage! Soon it becomes a dumping ground for all kind of things.
It's time to dive into garage organization process. Before you get into that spent 15-20% time in planning & collecting the right tools.
You can make your job simpler by just following these 2 basic steps
1. Organize what you have got in hand, and
2. Use Inexpensive Garage organizers to systematically arrange these items.
Organizing the Garage your own is not an expensive affair; all you need to know is what, where & how !
1. First step is to know what you have in store. For this you have to move everything out of your garage.
2. Once you get a hang of what all is lying in, you have to sort all the articles according to your usage. Sort out the stuff which you use very frequently, other articles which you use less often, yet other things which you just want to keep stored but do not use, and rest of the stuff which you do not need anymore!
3.Next, you have to give away the things which are just a pile on. Throw these off, donate, recycle; but move them out.
4.Plot how much space you need for car parking. Leave maximum space so that you can park smoothly, and then measure the free space available for rest of the stuff.
5.Classify the things according to how you are planning to organize the Garage. You can identify heavy articles/equipment for floor cabinets, bikes and other hang-able articles for hooks etc.
Once you clean and sort your garage space, it's time to look for right garage organization systems!
6. You can choose from a variety of inexpensive garage organization tools like-
a. Peg boards as wall shelves to keep smaller items,
b. Plastic cabinets to store heavier articles and lock away hazardous chemicals and metals,
c. Wall mounted hooks to hold your bikes, shovels, ladder etc.
7.Try to make maximum use of vertical space, keep the ground de-cluttered as much as you can. You can store away the articles you use rarely on the upper most wall mounted shelves/cabinets.
8.Make a spare "Extra" cabinet or a "Donation" cabinet in a spare corner for unwanted stuff which will keep piling on as the time progresses.
9.And most importantly, always make it a point to keep your garage in order, as an everyday practise!
