Lake Garda: the largest lake in Italy, located in Northern Italy between Verona

, Milan and Venice at the foot of the Alps, in a beautiful area of southern Europe. The lakeside towns around Lake Garda have charmed foreign visitors for centuries. Even the ancient Romans saw it as a luxury summer destination.

The lake is long and slim, stretching to the north and south. The southern lake shore is on low, rolling land and fairly built-up. But in contrast the dramatic fjord-like northern end is surrounded by towering mountains and cliffs. Most of the lakeside towns are popular as holiday resorts; they differ in character but all are well-connected by boat services.

The lake was formed in the Quaternary Ice Ages by a huge glacier, which made the lake into its unique shape as it flowed down from the Brenta Dolomites, cutting through and gouging out the valley. 'Piedmont' means a valley glacier that has spilled onto adjacent flat land, so you can see why Lake Garda has an axe shape because the ice spread onto the flat land as it came of the valley. The ice glacier melted which is the result of the freshwater water lake.

The climate of Lake Garda is lovely. Its similar to that of Mediterranean climate, with the weather being sunny with a north south breeze blowing throughout the day. It helps keep you cool especially during the summer months of the year when it gets really hot. This due to the lake acting as a huge solar panel with surrounding mountains acting as an insulator, keeping the heat in. The best time to go is usually the beginning or end of summer so May, June or September. In winter it can be very cold especially the water - in order to swim in it you will need a wet suit - but its ideal to do activities such as mountain biking. Also this is the time of the year when the lake is crystal clear and extremely beautiful and add to the fact that it won't be busy it may just tempt you for the perfect getaway for peace in mind, and just remember many villas in Italy won't have such a beautiful backdrop as those that are located near the lake.

The soil in Lake Garda is fertile because when the glacier moved through the valley, it ground up loose magnesium rich limestone into a paste which was deposited as moraine along the sides of the ice. When the glacier melted, the moraine resulted in the rich fertile soil found along the shores of Lake Garda. So it's no wonder that it is a place where fruit, olives and wine is produced, and the rich soil makes them full of flavour.

Lake Garda also has the biggest and most popular theme park in Italy, called 'Gardaland'. This Disney-styled theme park has attractions catered to kids of all ages. If your not into thrills then you can go more scenic and take up hiking or visit one of the many parks. The lake has many qualities about it, its just up to you to find them.
