Items need to be tumbled around to be broken down. Some bins have a feature that allows you to simply tip it over to tumble it, while others require you dig around and bring new items to the top. No matter the method you choose to use, it does need to be done on a regular basis.

Beyond that you need to add a little chemistry into the mix. To break items down you need to items working together. Those are carbon and nitrogen. Now you might be wondering what items would count for carbon. Any item heavy in carbon would break down into a carbon compound. This includes newspapers, wood shavings, straw and even cardboard. There are more items of course, but these give you an understanding of the basics. From there you need to add nitrogen.

Items that contain nitrogen include teas, coffees, plants, fruits, vegetables and even hair! All these items when broken down will release nitrogen into the compost bin. From there you will end up with rich and vital soil that will help you to produce the most amazing plants, as well as the best tasting fruits and vegetables.
