Garden Compost Bins Help To Save You Money
Garden compost bins are the perfect way to recycle your old leftovers and create
nutrient rich soil that can be used to grow strong and vital plants as well as delicious fruits and vegetables. Keeping that in mind it is important to remember that if you don't properly take care of your compost bin they won't have the same overall benefits of a well maintained one.
One of the first things you really need to keep in mind is that some items aren't going to breakdown in your garden compost pile. While it might be ideal to place everything possible into your compost pile, some things won't break down. Things like plastic, cigarette butts and other items aren't ideal for the pile. Other items are rocks, dairy, meats or other items high in protein.
But perhaps your complaint isn't about the things that won't break down, and it may be a concern about the smell. Many items have been created to help block out the odor. There are filters now available that can help block out the unsightly odors, and you can even find units that will fit in your kitchen that look decorative if you don't have a backyard available to you.
To get the most out of your garden compost bin will require you to keep giving it attention. While it may seem just as easy as dumping new items on the pile, this will have little effect. Items need to be tumbled around to be broken down. Some bins have a feature that allows you to simply tip it over to tumble it, while others require you dig around and bring new items to the top. No matter the method you choose to use, it does need to be done on a regular basis.
Beyond that you need to add a little chemistry into the mix. To break items down you need to items working together. Those are carbon and nitrogen. Now you might be wondering what items would count for carbon. Any item heavy in carbon would break down into a carbon compound. This includes newspapers, wood shavings, straw and even cardboard. There are more items of course, but these give you an understanding of the basics. From there you need to add nitrogen.
Items that contain nitrogen include teas, coffees, plants, fruits, vegetables and even hair! All these items when broken down will release nitrogen into the compost bin. From there you will end up with rich and vital soil that will help you to produce the most amazing plants, as well as the best tasting fruits and vegetables.
It takes no time at all to begin your own garden compost bin, just designate a place and close it off. Then begin adding your own components to make the most of it. With your own rich and fertile compost you will soon be able to feed your family with the offerings that come from the rich soil, and you'll not only be greener, but have more money in your wallet from the money you saved by growing your own food.
