From plastic garbage bags to multi-colour receptacles

Back in the day, refuse collection was a simple matter, be it household, garage or garden rubbish clearance. Every household had two dustbins outside the front door or down a side alley. You would bulge a black plastic bag filled to overflowing with newspapers, potato peelings, banana skins, coke cans and wine bottles into the receptacles outside the front door. On Saturday morning, they would be emptied by dustbin men and loaded onto a refuse lorry.

Household rubbish has changed today. It's no longer in a garbage bag awaiting transfer to the outside waste container; it's all over the house meant to be carefully divided up on a daily basis. The modern kitchen is filled with plastic containers coloured in pink, green, blue and black and are meant for storing different types of rubbish. There are separate bins for glass, plastic, food waste and cans. Besides household waste bins, there are garden rubbish clearance containers which are emptied by professional services on request.

From the nation of waste producers to eco-friendly households

Since the beginning of the refuse-separation environmental campaign, recycling has become top priority for a great many households. In 2001-2002, only 2 per cent of the British recycled their household waste; by 2003 the figure had skyrocketed to 14.5 per cent. Yet Britain was far behind other countries who took household, garage and garden rubbish clearance more seriously.

At first local councils issued guidelines, then instructions, then legally-backed demands that rubbish should be divided up and stored in colour-coded waste containers. They sent inspectors to make sure the rubbish laws were strictly observed. The British gradually understood that the issues of recycling and waste reduction affected everybody and should also concern everybody. A 15m plastic bottle used isn't going to vanish; it'll take 500 years to decompose.

Despite the British environmental enthusiasm during the 2000s and novelty household, garage and garden rubbish clearance solutions, UK households still produce over 30 million tons of rubbish, of which only 18 per cent is collected for recycling. There is still a lot to be done to reduce the amount of waste produced and increase the amount of rubbish recycled. Environmentalists believe the government needs to provide more support and funding for local councils to ensure every household has a comprehensive doorstep recycling scheme. They say recycling should become as easy as throwing out rubbish to improve their nation's recycling record.
