You'll probably think that some of the things I will tell you in this article are a matter of common sense. You are right; most of them are. But when it comes to accidents, many of them are precisely the result of our lack of common sense; we want to do things faster and so we forget about that one thing that could avoid our visit to the emergency room of a hospital.

So, here is a small list of things to always have in mind when it comes to gardening tools:

If you work with your kids, be sure to show them the proper use of every tool, advise them against playing with them, and only allow them to use those that are proper for their age and character. You should always be around when kids are using any kind of sharp object.

Learn before use. This applies to all pieces of gardening tools, but especially to those that are mechanical or powered. You may find that people in the local nurseries know a lot about gardening and tools, so if you feel you are not sure about something, ask around. You may even consult experts online.

Always have in mind safety instructions. Use the proper protective gear and keep a first-aid kit close, as well as emergency telephones.

Give your gardening tools the proper care and the proper use. Don't use tools for jobs they are not intended for; doing so can lead to accidents, and it may end up in your equipment going to waste long before it should.

Keep warranty papers in order and easy to find.

Never leave sharp or dangerous tools within the reach of children when in storage.

Keep your gear in a clean, dry environment. Avoid storing tools when they are wet or dirty.

Always stand in steady ground when using tools with blades or that are powered. Avoid working when it's raining or when surfaces are slippery.

Gardening should be a really fun and safe activity. Being careful and observing safety measures will eventually become a habit and you'll find that is always better to prevent accidents rather than deal with the consequences.
