February marks what gardeners call the middle of the winter, and this is a time when a lot of things need to be done to prepare the garden for the summer months. If the sky is clear during this time it is believed to be a sign that the cold weather will remain for a few more weeks, while if the weather iscloudy at the start of the month it is thought that it will start to get warmer and spring is on its way.
Trees and shrubbery need protecting during this time as they are still susceptible to the cold, but you should prune roses as soon as you see the buds begin to form.
With perennials and bulbs you should keep an eye on your tender ones and throw any ones that have rotted away. If you see any sprouting plant them immediately or they will die off. Prune any ornamental grasses and start to plant outdoors as the weather gets warmer.
If you want to plant poppies, spread the seeds on the last snow of the winter, as the water will absorb them into the ground and they will start the growth process.
If your lawn is looking a little tired add some herbicide and don't walk or drive on the grass if it is frozen, or it will kill the grass off.
Apply spray to fruit trees and replace the top soil on any herbs to allow them the nutrients to grow.
