The rising price of fuel has become a daily problem we all face

. Driving is such a vital part of our lives that we are forced to pay these high prices, no matter what. I thus it is imperative that we understand how to improve our gas mileage, just to manage our budgets.

There are ways to improve gas mileage, but we have to be careful that we don't fall victim to the many hoaxes that become prevalent in a situation like this. We want to cut our gas expenses, so it's easy to believe almost anything that claims to do that.

Some say that if we add hydrogen to our gas it would definitely improve our mileage by accelerating the combustion process and providing more power. There are several products that claim to do this, but I really doubt if they do any good. Some claim that this will increase your mileage by up to 30%, but if this was indeed possible you would already know about it because no one could keep that secret.

There is also a claim that magnetic type fuel savers will add 25% to your mileage. There are several of these on the market, but I think they're hoaxes.

One of these is Energycel. It claims that by forming a strong magnetic field around the fuel line it aligns the molecules to burn faster and more efficiently. It claims to work in just about any kind of fuel system from gasoline to propane to natural gas. If this were true, companies that burn huge amounts of gas and fuel such as airlines and trucking companies would be all over it. They spend billions of dollars for fuel each year, and even a 1% saving in fuel costs could spell the difference between profit and loss. Not only that, but it would give them a huge competitive advantage over the competition. Luckily for us, good old capitalism makes that almost impossible.

I have seen claims for an oil replacement called Petromolly on the Internet that state that it reduces emissions by up to 50% and improves mileage by up to 30%. Those claims are so old that they almost seem ridiculous now. The EPA tested Petromolly in 1999 and found that it did improve mileage and reduce emissions, but it was only by 2% to 3%. 2% to 3% may be significant for a large company, but for me, I'm sure i wouldn't even notice it.

There's another funny one, called Terbonator. It supposedly creates turbulence in the intake chamber of the carburetor and somehow helps the air move around the bends and corners faster, allowing the air to get into the combustion chamber quicker. They claim that this improves mileage. But in reality, this thing is just a metal fin that you put into the air intake. It may direct the air and cause turbulence, but it also restricts airflow by blocking some of the intake. This only reduces horsepower, increases fuel burn and reduces miles per gallon. It's a scam.
