Food is essential to supply the body with sufficient energy to keep it active

. When we eat food, it goes to the gastrointestinal system where it is further broken down into forms that can be easily assimilated into the body.

The process of digestion is an intricate one that involves many organs. Together, the esophagus, small intestines, large intestines, stomach, liver, pancreas, and the gall bladder are involved in the process of digestion. However, if any of these organs are over worked or diseased, they tend to malfunction because of which the process of digestion suffers.

There are several gastrointestinal diseases; however, there are certain symptoms that are common to most of these gastrointestinal diseases. Some symptoms that may indicate that you are suffering from a gastrointestinal disease are blood in the stool, pain in the abdominal area that ranges from mild to severe, heartburn, a change in bowel movements, and rapid weight loss.

Here are some of the most common gastrointestinal diseases:

Gastritis. There is a spectrum of diseases that makes up the disease known as gastritis. Gastritis is characterized with the inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach. Usually gastritis is caused due to the dietary habits of a person. Excessive ingestion of alcohol and prolonged usage of certain medications like non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs can cause problems in the stomach because of which the lining gets damaged and therefore inflamed. Gastritis may also develop after a person has had a surgery. Severe burns on the abdominal area, traumatic injury and severe infections caused by any other reason may lead to the development of gastritis.

Gastritis may also be a side effect of bile reflux, anemia and other autoimmune disorders. The symptoms of gastritis include belching, vomiting and nausea. Sometimes, you may find blood in the vomit or stool. This could be an indication of internal bleeding in the stomach.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, is a condition in which the stomach regurgitates and pushes out the gastric juices into the esophagus. When there is an abundance of gastric juices inside the stomach, these tend to react with the inner lining of the stomach and begin to damage it.

Inflammatory bowel disease. Inflammatory bowel disease is a group of common disorders in which the walls of the intestines begin to inflame. Ulcerative colitis and a disease known as Crohn's disease are both common conditions of this type. Their causes have not yet been understood fully.

These are just a couple of gastrointestinal diseases but there are many more like Coeliac Disease, colorectal polyps, Crohn's Disease, diverticulosis, gallstones, and pancreatitis to name a few.
