Gatwick Aviation Museum - A Unique Display Of Aviation Prowess

Located in the small village known as Charlwood

, the Gatwick Aviation Museum was initially a private collection of planes which belonged to a wealthy English businessman named Peter Vallance. He began his valuable collection with the Sea Hawk that he had bought to improve the level of security of his business park. However, as time passed, Peter Vallance continued to add to his collection and became passionate about the subject of aeronautics which resulted in his collection improving dramatically. Since the death of Peter Vallance, the collection has been transformed into an educational centre dedicated to improving the awareness of aviation history in the country.

Visitors to the Gatwick Aviation Museum will have the privilege of seeing a number of complete aircrafts such as Hawker Harrier, Hawker Hunter, Fairy Gannet, English Electric Lightning, Blackburn Buccaneer, De Havilland Venom and Avro Shackletons, to name a few. Several engines, technical equipment used in aeronautic engineering and approximately 500 airplane models can also be seen here. Visitors are required to make a donation to enter the museum which has no minimum cost. The entire facility can be divided into two sections: the indoor exhibits and the outdoor exhibits.

The indoor exhibits mostly comprise technical equipment which is used for aviation purposes such as radar devices and radio transmitters. You can also see a variety of engines in this part of the museum, offering insight in to how an aircraft functions and operates. The star of the show, as far as this museum is concerned, is indubitably the aircraft collection that is located outside the museum building. Visitors will also get a chance to step inside a Shackelton Mk3 which is an aircraft that was designed for military purposes. This airborne fighting machine is powered by a powerful four piston engine designed by Sir Ernest Shackleton.
