The French-raised Marciano brothers launched Gc Watches in 1984

, at a time when the popularity and public profile of their Guess brand was at its giddy heights.

Backed by an eye-catching and innovative black-and-white ad campaign, Guess had almost single-handedly brought denim back from its deathbed with its three-zip Marilyn jean. Already, it was beginning its steady expansion into ready-to-wear and accessories. But the jeans were where it all began.

Fired by an oddly French fascination with the allure of the Old West, lead designer Georges Marciano was convinced that denim could be not just rugged and wearable but sexy and managed to convince the fashion world that he was right.

Guess was about combining American ease with European style, the upscale with the cutting edge, and with a little help from Claudia Schiffer that image rooted itself in the culture.

The Gc Watch collection follows a similar path. Its Sports Chic line combines elements of sporting classics with luxury features. The Gc Sport, for instance, is the perfect watch for indulging in a little Bond-like mayhem before cleaning up at the casino.

Handsome and robust at once, it features a carbon-fiber dial with Roman numerals, a stainless steel case touched off with rose gold and a bracelet in black PVD on stainless steel.

The Diver Chic series features a different blend of the active and the elegantly feminine, with models that are water-resistant to 100m but that might also come with a mother-of-pearl dial and a white ceramic bracelet.

Other Gc collections might be pitched slightly differently but still aim to walk that line between toughness and glamour. Take the Bella Class series, for instance, which is part of the Precious collection and, with its melding of chronograph features and the luxury of diamonds and rose gold PVD, lives up to its billing as urban chic for the cosmopolitan woman. More than 25 years on, Guess and Gc Watches are still bringing the West to town.
