Getting a green card is the first step in the US naturalization process. Apart from the fact, that it bestows the right to work and stay legally in the US, it is the most important requirement to become a US citizen. A person can get a green card through

Besides these, there are many other special circumstances that will lead to a green card.. Each category has its own requirements and eligibility criteria. Also the applicants have to wait for a long time until their visa number becomes current exception is the immediate relative category. The DV lottery or the greencard lottery route is another easy route to gain the permanent residency status,provided that applicants have some luck on their side!
DV lottery An Overview
Every year the US Department of State issues 55,000 immigrant visas through the lottery program. This program targets countries that have low immigrant numbers to the US. The list of eligible countries change every year. First step in this program is to determine whether the applicant belongs to the list of eligible countries and whether they satisfy the two basic requirements of -
1. Possessing a high school or its equivalent educational qualification
2. Having 2 yrs of work experience within the past 5yrs, that too in a profession that demands at least 2 yrs training
Once the DV entrant has satisfied these criteria , then the next step would be to start the registration process. The registration is open on the Government site only for a particular period of time. Once the applicant has successfully entered the lottery program, he/she has to then wait for the computer to make the random selections.
Winning a DV lottery does not mean that the applicant has been granted permission to enter the US. It is just an opportunity for the applicant to apply for an immigrant visa. Inspite of getting selected, the they can be denied a visa, if he/she does not qualify for a visa.
DV Lottery 2014
October 2,2012 is a very important day, as the registration for green card lottery for 2014 is scheduled to kick start on this day. There is no entry fee to participate in this program. The timings for this electronic submission ( No paper submission) process are as below
Starts on Oct 2,2022 12:00 noon
Ends on Nov 3.2012 12:00 noon
The US Department of State advises all entrants to enter their applications at the earliest and not wait till the last week. They are also advised to check the government's instructions regarding the qualifications at DV lottery instructions
List of 'Not eligible' countries for DV 2014 - Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China ( Mainland-born), Colombia, Dominican republic,Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India,Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines,South Korea, UK(except N. Ireland) with its dependent territories and Vietnam
However, those who are born in Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Taiwan and natives of Guatemala are eligible for this year.
Entrant status check is a feature that allows DV entrants to check if they have been selected. To avail this, they need to use the unique confirmation number saved from their registration process. This will be available from May 1,2013 onwards and lucky winners will be directed to the next step when they use this Entrant Status Check Feature.
Note: This is the only way of determining an applicant's win in the lottery. The US Department of State or the US Embassy in that particular country will not intimate the winners, there will be no correspondence regarding this. Additionally, those who missed out on the lottery will have to check the status on their own.
