Gemstone and fashion jewelry trends are commonly forecast by what gems sold best or caused a sensation during the winter AGTA Gem Fair in Tuscon. With 50 plus gem shows going on in one city at the same time it is common for jewelers and gem buyers to purchase gemstone inventory for the entire year during this show. The 2010 show results indicate the hot trend is economics. Designers and gemstone buyers are putting frugality ahead of luxury - across the board.
At mid-year, the economic trend was highly visible again at the JCK Las Vegas show . A recap of this June event reported that designers included low-end lines in the high-end Couture show. Items that retail for $300 and up and some $150 items displayed on the high-end side are a clear signal that accommodating lower price points is the predominant trend in all market segments. The recap further stated that as the June show progressed, sales results made it very clear that buyers were focusing on lower cost items.
On the design-side, frugality calls for artful gemstone substitutions and an innovative use of metals. Substitution does equate to using inferior or poor quality gems or man-made synthetics. Remaining true to the spirit of fine jewelry design, there are hundreds of affordable and interesting gemstones that can be substituted for expensive stones. For example, blue Kyanite from Nepal has an astounding velvet color that is easily mistaken for very expensive (and rare) kashmir blue sapphire. At $50 per carat (wholesale), faceted kashmir blue Kyanite from Nepal is an excellent substitute for blue sapphire in any jewelry design.
This same trend towards frugality explains the growing popularity of surfaced treated Mystic Fire Topaz in engagement rings in lieu of more expensive, large carat diamonds. A checkerboard cut Mystic Fire Topaz in any size and shape has a brilliant color display that makes a stunning solitaire. It is also seen set with other gemstones such as small diamond baguettes in wedding bands. These surface treated Topaz gemstones are an excellent affordable substitutions for several precious gems because they are highly durable, offer excellent value and can last a lifetime with proper care.
As the 2010 business year continues to unfold, successful jewelers and beaders are catering to consumers tightening budgets. This year's gemstone jewelry winners are sure to be pieces that look far more expensive than their costs.
