Of the many provinces that make up the more than 7,000 islands in the archipelago, Leyte is considered as one of the most scenic, thanks to its natural beauty and other sightseeing spots. Here are a few of the basic facts about the province.
General Information on Leyte, Philippines: Geography and Climate
The Camotes Sea marks the western boundary of the island, while the province of Samar faces the north. For a long time the two were joined together as one province. In between them lies the San Juanico Strait, while the Leyte Gulf occupies the southern end.
Aside from the seas, the mountain ranges mark the landscape. It is on the northwest and northeast sections that these mountains can be seen. Coming closer to the middle you will see the Leyte Valley, which starts from the Gulf of Carigara all the way to the Leyte Gulf. As for the weather, it is mostly dry except from November to July when rains falls down frequently.

Most of the towns and municipalities in the province are dependent on agriculture and farming. Among the many crops that are cultivated here include the tobacco, bananas, rice, potatoes, and abaca. The latter in particular has become big business, as it is being exported to other countries in the world. However, the city of Tacloban has all the markings of an urbanized city and is a commercial center. It is where a lot of the businesses are being set up. Those living on the coasts however, are heavily dependent on fishing.

The history of the province under the Spanish rule was marked by periodic uprisings and numerous battles and this would continue until the arrival of the Americans in the country. As with most of Southeast Asia, the island province was besieged and captured by the Japanese sometime in 1942. Two years later the Allied Forces returned and engaged the Japanese in the famous Battle of Leyte Gulf, the most wide ranging naval conflict in the history of the world. Following the war, rehabilitation of the island began in earnest.

It should come as no surprise that one of the biggest attractions are the larger than life statues of General MacArthur and the soldiers at Red Beach. Besides this however, there is also the Our Lady of Assumption Church, the San Juanico Bridge, and the many islands around it like Limasawa and Panaon. For diving aficionados, there are the Padre Burgos Jetty, Tangkaan Point, Malitbog, and Bitu-On Beach.
There are many festivals being celebrated here, among them the Pintados Festival (on the final week of June), the Sangyaw Festival, the Buyogan Festival and the Sanggutan Festival in May.
