General Information About Koalas

The koala is a native animal in Australia, spotted in the countrys coastal regions in the east and south

. The word koala is said to mean doesnt drink, but this is thought to be more of a made up meaning than real. Its appearance is similar to those of bears and it is interchangeably called bear as well.

The koala has a very interesting design of its hand by nature, as its five fingers that make up its hand include two opposing thumbs, designed for a better grip than with one alone.

The koala has one of the most interesting brains. Studies have shown that koalas have their brains shrinking with the production of new generations, a cause attributed to them adapting to a diet that is low in energy. Also, the brain of the koala forms only 0.2% of its body weight. Interestingly, koalas are the only animals on Earth to have such a small sized brain.

Observers have found koalas to be silence loving animals and even when they communicate, the pitch and frequency is low. However, come breeding season and the males can be heard with loud voices that can be heard a kilometer away! Also, when in danger or in need of help, koalas give out cries similar to those of a human baby.

Enough information is not available on the lifespan of koalas but in one particular instance, koalas captured for purposes of observation have been found to reach eighteen years of age.

Female koalas take two to three years to reach maturity while male koalas take a bit longer, about three to four years.

A mature healthy female koala can produce a koala baby annually for about twelve years consecutively. Koalas have been rarely reported to have twins but special cases do occur. Moreover, mating between koalas occurs between December and March generally.

A baby kola is given a special name, Joey. Surprisingly, it is hairless, blind and earless.
