South African Airways is the major domestic and international airline company in South Africa

SAA has thousands of employees worldwide. Its staff represents South Africa's appreciation for racial diversity. The airline has a Women in Aviation program designed to bring more women into leadership roles. Female leadership in the company is now nearing fifty percent. SAA realizes the effects that apartheid had on its country's image and its business and has done much to improve those perceptions.

SAA, like any other airline, has had some accidents in its past. Since 1934, there have been eleven SAA accidents, and ten of them occurred before 1970. The most recent accident happened in 1987 and was the most devastating that the airline had seen. There have been no accidents since then, and only one attempt to hijack a plane. Adapting new technology to their business model has allowed SAA to maintain a safe experience for its passengers in recent decades.

SAA has five domestic destinations: Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. It has international destinations in twenty six countries, more than any other airline company in the nation. Most international SAA flights depart from Johannesburg.

SAA is a member of Star Alliance, the largest group of international airlines in the world. It is the only African airline in the alliance. This is consistent with the company's goal to bring South Africa into the global community. Of course, SAA also claims it is committed to providing quality service to its customers. The airline's popularity in Africa suggests that it has been very successful in keeping its customers satisfied.

SAA has a complicated past, which is what one should expect from a company that has existed for almost eight decades and seen the rise and fall of apartheid. SAA flights have a good record, and the customers are satisfied enough to keep using the company's services.
