General Information about Finches

Finches come in various different varieties' including zebra finches, society finches, Gouldian finches and there's a few more I could mention but I won't go into them for now I'll stick to the ones I mentioned.

Let's start with the zebra finch these unique little birds have a very distant pattern that resembles a zebra around the chest area. They are also the easiest the breed, which is why these are the most popular for people to keep.

Society finches are quite different, there pattern can be very nice the most common pattern is the white and brown but they can come in many different patterns.

Gouldian finches are very nice the colors patterns are very vibrant and are classed are the most colourful bird species. The color pattern around the head is usually red, blue, and green. On its chest is purple and yellow there wings are green and there is blue under there tail. There are other color variations but this is the most common.

They all get along fine in an aviary setting. They are very easy to take care of, they are hardy and charming. They are also VERY inexpensive. I remember you can buy several mutations for less than $10 each from local breeders or pet shops. Societies were a little more expensive. You might pay more in pet shops. But they are still very affordable.

Finches easily except all kinds of foods unlike parrots who tend to take a lot longer to except new food items. That's not so with finches and canaries. They are very curious, and love trying new foods.

They enjoy fresh fruits and veggies a lot, parsley and Dandelions are very good for them. You can get a lot of free foods from your own garden to feed to them and your finches will really enjoy them. Many people might not want to bother with that but I hope that you do care for the happiness and wellbeing of these little Birds.

When your breeding finches keep in mind, that zebra finches are the easiest to breed. You should place the cage in an area that does not have a lot of people/pet traffic. Make sure not to disturb them after they have started nesting.

When breeding in cages only Place only one pair of birds in one cage. A cage about 16x16x20 would be adequate. Breeding Baskets can be purchased at most pet stores. You can also use nest boxes which hang on the outside of the cages. Birds feel safer when higher so Place the nest high in the cage.

Eggs are usually laid one per day. Incubation starts after the last egg is laid, and the eggs start hatching about thirteen days after been laid. Finches can lay between one and eight eggs, but most nests have between two to five eggs on average. The female does most of the incubating but the male will also take his turn on the eggs to give the female a chance to stretch, eat, and drink.
