General Outboard Servicing Techniques Part 1

During hard times its useful to know how to service your own outboard engine

, whether you have tohatsu outboards or mariner outboards or whatever, the basic principle is the same. In this article we will concentrate on 2 stroke outboard motor servicing. And the engine we will pick as our imaginary subject is the mariner 60hp outboard. Tools you will need are as follows

Spark plug spanner (for 2 strokes this is 13/16)

Gear oil and a method of filling (grade/viscosity is EP90)

Drip tray

Marine grade grease and grease gun

Spray grease (the best is wurth HHS 2000, it goes on thin and sets very sticky)

Spark plugs - ask your local dealer who has outboards for sale which are the right ones for your engine (for our imaginary 60hp from mariner outboards I will be using NGK BP8HN-10

Gearbox pressure tester, water pressure tester and compression tester (to do the job right you will need these, but if you don't have them I will give you an alternative method)

Before we start the service on our outboard you first must test the engine, I know this sounds obvious but if you are putting your outboard away for the winter or getting it out in the spring, you want to know its running right!! If your motor is on the back of your speed boat or rib then you can launch it for this part, if its a smaller engine that can be run in a large tub off an inflatable boat or dinghy then nick a neighbors wheelie bin (you know - the neighbors you don't like, I think they may have run over your cat a couple of years ago or something) and chop it in half, you can then test the engine in there. Firstly check ease of starting - tohatsu outboards should start 3rd pull cold and first pull warm (mariner outboards which have a priming system should start first pull from cold), check gears - make sure it goes into forward and neutral without rattling off the clutch dogs, stop switch, and idle in and out of gear, if you can open the throttle in gear without emptying your tank then great, check the engine accelerates without hesitation from idle, if it doesnt you need to adjust the idle speed mixture on the carbs.
