Zamboanga is a city bounded on the west by the sea of Sulu and by Celebes Sea on the southwestern part. It is eight hundred fifty kilometers away from the national capital region of the Philippines, Manila. It is also surrounded by smaller islands like Malanipa island. The most popular among them is the Santa Cruz Island which is often visited by tourists.
It is one of the cities in the Philippines that have a strong economy. This could be attributed to the growing number of establishments there for business. Today there are more than sixty financial companies in the city. There is also a large growth of medium scale enterprises in this developing city. It is also filled with malls and other establishments for leisure like cinemas and restaurants. Several investors from other countries have also set up their businesses there like manufacturing plants for toys and processing plants for food.
There is still a large sector of the economy dedicated in producing agricultural products. It is one of the cities in the Philippines that export seaweeds, fish and flowers. There are small scale industries in Zamboanga as well manufacturing different handicrafts.
The people living in Zamboanga city come from diverse backgrounds. Some of the people originally came from Luzon and Visayan provinces. The languages that people speak include Tagalog, Cebuano, Spanish and English. Most of the people practice the Catholic religion while others are Protestants and Muslims.
It is one of the diverse cities in the Philippines and this is evident in their festivals. They have a festival commemorating the foundation of the city. Most of the Catholics in the city celebrate the Santo Entierro or the Good Friday by having plays depicting the passion of Jesus Christ. They also display images of Christ on the streets. The city also has two holidays for the Muslims called Isra Wal Miraj and Eid-al-Fitr. The latter is also a holiday observed throughout the Philippines.
The earliest history of Zamboanga is still full of controversy for many historians in the Philippines however many of them believe that there were tribes that had settled there before the Spanish explorers discovered the island. Most of the people believed to have first lived there are the tribes we can still see today. They are known as the Lutaos, Tausugs and Samais.
The Spanish conquerors came there in the fifteenth century. The famous landmark known as Fort Pilar was the battlefield between the Spaniards and the Moro group living there at that time. The Americans reached the city in the late eighteenth century and became the capital of Mindanao.
Zamboanga city is one of the places in the Philippines that are rarely visited by typhoons. The weather there is usually humid. The rainy season is from June until October while the driest months are from March until May.
