Generation Y - Millennials
Over 80 million strong, this generation was raised by doting parents who told them that they were special and could be anything they wanted to when they grew up. They played in little league teams that did not have a clear winner or loser, just winners. Often adorned with trophies and certificates for participation this generation needs constant attention and demands a supportive environment.
The Millennials do not live to work, they work for the experience not for the sake of working. Their parents were laid off from long term jobs while they were growing up, and they have no concept of a lifetime job with retirement benefits. This generation puts lifestyle, friends and family above work.
For the Millennials living at home into their mid twenties isn't looked down upon. Adulthood is viewed upon as starting at age 26 and parents play a large role in the Gen Y's professional life. They search for the "ideal" job that will fit their lifestyle as opposed to many baby boomers who revolved their lives around their jobs.
For this generation the professional and personal life are not separate but one. They do not like the structure of a 9 5 workday in an office, however that does not mean they are lazy. Gen Y is by far the most productive generation yet often working over 40 hours per week. They are outspoken about personal needs and are not afraid to speak up for themselves and what they feel they deserve.
Gen Y wants to be surrounded by a nurturing learning environment where they will be continuously engaged and adopted into the surrounding culture. They are willing to sacrifice pay for flexible work hours and demand leaders that can provide leadership they can follow.
The concept of staying in one job is an antiquated idea for this generation. They do not view working in multiple jobs throughout their life as a negative, in fact it is viewed as a positive learning experience. Ways to retain this generation as happy long term employees are to offer them different roles in the company that will give them exposure to many different areas.
Motivation for this generation is the easiest, they require constant positive messages. If you nurture your employees with flexible hours and periodical rewards you will have hard working dedicated employees for a long time.
