The Jet d'Eau

It's hard [read impossible] to tour this city around the shores of the famous lake and not see the Jet d'Eau! As one of the city's best-known landmarks, the Jet d'Eau is situated where the lake empties into the Rhone River. The Jet d'Eau was first installed in1886 a bit further downstream, and was originally used as a safety valve, but its aesthetic qualities were soon recognised and it was moved and made a permanent feature. The current fountain was installed in 1951, and since 2003 the fountain has been running for twenty-four hours a day year-round. It is one of the world's largest water fountains and can be seen from virtually everywhere in the city - even from planes flying into Geneva airport. Ski transfers might have to be put on hold, however, so you can get up close and personal with this 142-metre water spout. Everywhere within a half a kilometre can be soaked by the falling spray, but for those who want to be more adventurous, there is a jetty that can take you right out to the fountain. But beware, you are likely to get soaked!

Muse d'Art et d'Histoire

If you have braved the waters of the Jet d'Eau and need a place to dry off and slow down before going on to catch your Geneva airport ski transfers to the slopes, then head to the Muse d'Art et d'Histoire, or the Museum of Art and History, which is the largest museum in the city. Located at Rue Charles-Galland 2, this architecturally stunning museum was built between 1903 and 1910 and boasts a large and impressive collection of works from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The range of works spans the collections of fine arts, with examples of paintings from the Genevan, Swiss, Italian, and modern schools; the sculpture garden has some of the largest collections of Genevan sculptors works. The collection of applied arts has jewellery, clocks and enamels; while the archaeology section covers a wide range from pre-history to Rome to Greece, the Near East and Egypt, giving you an great place to while away an afternoon.
