Genital Warts Testing - Do I Have Genital Warts?

You may have noticed growths or lesions of some kind around your genital area

. Does this mean you have genital warts? There are different ways of diagnosing genital warts, but if you want to be sure, you should schedule genital warts testing with your doctor. This will give you the most accurate possible assessment of whether or not you have been infected with the specific strands of HPV or human papillomavirus that lead to outbreaks of genital warts on your thighs, stomach, buttocks, or on, inside, or around your genitals.

If you have an active outbreak, the doctor will give you visual examination to see if you can be diagnosed simply by viewing the genital warts. Sometimes the outbreaks are large and red or gray colored and they make themselves obvious in that way. Other times, though, the warts might be flesh colored. They might be flat and difficult to see. In this case, the doctor can do a simple genital warts testing of adding acetic acid to the areas that are suspected to be infected. True genital warts will turn white when brushed with acetic acid. This is how you will know if they are genital warts or growths of some other kind.

The genital warts testing that uses acetic acid can only be used for warts that are on the outside of the body, however. There are other kinds of testing methods the doctor will use to try to find warts that are inside the body. One of these is a routine Pap smear. A Pap smear will reveal any cell abnormalities that may indicate genital warts or otherwise be a cause for concern. If you have had a Pap smear and have tested positive for any kind of HPV, it is important to continue to receive regular Pap smears until the results clear up and you test normal again. Many kinds of HPV do go away on their own as the body learns how to overcome the virus.

A colposcopic exam can help a doctor investigate the walls of the vagina even further. A speculum is inserted into the vagina to help the doctor see what is happening. Here the doctor may decide to insert another kind of dye to help find other genital warts or lesions. The doctor may also decide to swab for a specimen or series of cells. Those cells can then be sent to the lab for further analysis to see if this genital warts testing has turned up definite results on whether the patient has been infected with the virus.
