George Magalios and the Game Face of Glory

A game face is not a mask. It is a projection of the inner burn within an athlete ready to do battle to do the death to achieve glory through victory. In baseball, it is the pitcher, particularly the relief pitcher, who wears a game face. Full of grimace, fearsome, and exuding power, a game face aims to intimidate its opponent. In order to prevail at the highest levels one must be in unison with one's darker natures. The good and the evil, the animal and the cerebral, the world and the earth: they must fuse to become an unforgettable countenance of victory in the darkest moments, when loss or death is as much a likelihood as victory.

The work of George Anastasios Magalios, a painter from Montreal, is a product of this intensity. When the painter paints he becomes a warrior. The war is between the many natures of the artist, the fear of failure that beckons like the black death behind every new work, and the glory of revealing that emerges with every successful work of art. George Magalios, a painter of paintings he calls "The Fall Line", and the founder of George Magalios Studios, has eschewed the standard path of the contemporary artist: move to New York, kiss the right people, smile, drink the right drinks, and hope for acceptance into the inner circle of Chelsea. Prevailing in the face of dread, in the face of weak and cynical painting, he stares down the pretty boy artists and reduces them to a pile of pseudo-academic rubble. The ballplayer in him is prepared for this challenge. He wills glory in every application of oil paint because his ground palette comes from fire, the fire of prehistory and there is no defeating prehistory. The light of the cave and its colours illuminate every countenance.
