Get A Detailed Insight Into Vulnerability Testing
Vulnerability Testing is a systematic assessment of a product to decide upon the
capability of security procedures, identifying the security deficit, providing data from which the prediction of the effectiveness of a proposed security is measured. This also confirms the capability of such a measure after the implementation is done.
A regular network vulnerability test for all systems is very important to make sure that the configurations are set correctly and that the proper security patches are applied properly.
Networks which deal in finance, government and the private sectors should be monitored regularly to protect them against the various real world attacks which are prevalent throughout the globe. This further is used to expand and develop the attack block databases.
The
vulnerability testing is done in five steps. They are:
1.Collecting the requirements. This includes reviewing the statement of work and gathering any other information which might find some use. Some additional requirement includes details like specifying the kind of testing which is not in the scope or any definite reporting requirements.
2.Identifying roles and responsibilities. Certain times even the roles are pre-determined. Responsibilities like vulnerability scanning, going to monitor while testing and who is to be notified if there are denial of service conditions.
3.Test Plan. This defines the testing at the granular form. It specifies which configurations are to be used, which IP addresses are to be scanned, how the testing is done and what will be the procedure to halt.
4.Implementation. Implementation includes executing the tests, plugging into the network and executing the vulnerability scan all according to the requirements.
5.Report. The vulnerability report is done after the testing results are reviewed by the Testing team. This is usually done with the system administrators. They help the Testing team to gather all the necessary information in identifying a false positive.
Statistics have shown that systems are on the rise and guarding them against threats is a necessity. Vulnerability testing is one tool which ensures a secure system. They should be done regularly to prevent any intrusion and penetration. You need to have an excellent follow-up plan to correct any vulnerability that is detected.
