The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science was founded in 1986 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Maxwell Museum of Anthropology was founded in 1932, and was the first public museum in Albuquerque. It is an anthropology museum lying at the University of New Mexico Campus, which was created to house and display the growing collection of artifacts gathered from field schools of archaeological research associated with the UNM Anthropology Department, the School of American Research, and the Museum of New Mexico. Currently, there are over 10 million items coming from the countries of the North, South, and Central America, along with Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands. There are also two permanent exhibits in it: the Ancestors that covers the 4-million-year history of the evolution of humans, and the People of the Southwest that shows a detailed record of 11,000 years of Southwestern culture. Heading out to the Open Space Visitor Center in western Albuquerque is one of the many exciting things to do when in Albuquerque. The centers mission is to raise awareness and provide education about the environment through programs and has become a leading facility. Some of the features of this center are: a permanent exhibit space, an art gallery, 24 acres of agricultural fields, and a striking view of the Sandia Mountains. There are also relaxing indoor and outdoor viewing areas where visitors can enjoy the sights of wildlife throughout the year, or Sandhill cranes and other migratory birds during their fall and winter migratory season. The harvest festival after the summers is also entertaining. The outdoor exhibit also includes many traditional gardens which are enjoyed by all for its arroyo gardens, pebble gardens, olla gardens and the waffle garden, which harvest a massive amount of water. While visiting the center with your kids, the children can be kept amused inside where programs are designed especially for their age like puppet shows, origami, and coloring pages. You can visit the center any time of the year.

Albuquerque Vacations - Turquoise Museum

Containing the worlds largest assortment of turquoise which comes from 60 different mines in the world, the Turquoise Museum is truly a little gem of a museum. For over 40 years, the turquoise collection in store here has been used for information and photography. The museum teaches visitors about the mysteries of the blue stone by uncovering its history, showing specimens and stories. The journey begins from a tunnel embedded with turquoise in the walls, and leads one to an exhibit which shows the blue stones geology, history, and mythology. Maps show where the stone is mined ranging from Egypt to Kingman, Arizona and ways on how to find the best quality turquoise is shown. There is also a real lapidary shop and the jewelry made there is sold in a gift shop that's open until 5pm. This is a privately owned museum, and is a delight for any visitor.
